Birmingham Workforce Programs Create Openings for Residents and Local Groups
City initiatives launched since 2024 are training adults for jobs in construction, logistics, manufacturing and healthcare while helping nonprofits build their own programs.

The City of Birmingham launched Reinvest Birmingham in April 2024 as a $20 million workforce training initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Recompete Pilot Plan. The program targets adults ages 24-54 and removes barriers such as transportation and childcare costs.
Programs target specific sectors and neighborhoods
Reinvest Birmingham focuses training in construction, logistics, advanced manufacturing and professional services. Sessions occur in neighborhoods including Pratt City and North Birmingham. The City also runs Good Jobs, a free healthcare workforce training initiative led by the Department of Innovation & Economic Opportunity. Separately, the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District operates a six-month program that pays participants $15 per hour for 20 hours per week in maintenance trades such as plumbing and painting, followed by job placement support.
In May 2026 the City added the Birmingham Workforce Partner Accelerator, a six-month effort running July through December 2026. The accelerator assists nonprofits, startups and community organizations in developing scalable workforce programs.
Goals and early reach
Reinvest Birmingham sets targets to train 2,500 residents, place 1,500 into jobs and retain 1,200 for at least one year, according to city documents at ieo.birminghamal.gov/workforce-development. These figures come directly from the Recompete Pilot Plan funding announcement and related city reports.
The combination of direct resident training and support for local organizations positions the city to expand workforce capacity without relying on new federal dollars beyond the initial allocation.
