Digital Birmingham Initiative: The Innovation to Know About This Month

Birmingham is advancing its transformation into a smart city through a collaboration between the City of Birmingham, the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Alabama Power Company that applies data intelligence to infrastructure and daily services.

Partnership Foundations

The effort centers on using technology to address local needs in public safety, mobility and energy. Digital Birmingham serves as the main vehicle for integrating these tools into everyday operations across the city. The approach emphasizes sustainable urban development and efforts to close gaps in digital access for residents.

Active Programs in Place

Current work includes an Open Data Portal focused on public safety information, real-time bus tracking for transit users, ShotSpotter technology for gunshot detection, Zyp BikeShare for smart bike access and the Brighter Birmingham program converting street lighting to LED fixtures. These tools support connectivity and service delivery in line with the city's established smart city strategy.

Planned Expansions

Future steps feature a Bus Rapid Transit system designed to link 25 neighborhoods and the creation of a UAB Smart City Research Center. The center will examine health outcomes, socio-economic effects and infrastructure design as part of ongoing development.

Grant Milestone

In March 2018 the city received a Smart Cities Readiness Challenge Grant to apply technology and data toward solving local challenges, improving services and strengthening connectivity. That award provided the framework for the initiatives now underway.
